Truncus arteriosus - What is it?

Truncus arteriosus is the name given to a "unique"(rare to occur) heart disease which is present since birth. During this disease the so called truncus arteriosus never fully changes to aorta and pulmonary artery. Classification of truncus arteriosus was formulated by two scientists - Edwards and Collet.
They divided Truncus arteriosus to three classes which differ because of branching patterns.

Main cause resulting in truncus arteriosus isn't known yet. There are several theories stating that truncus arteriosus disease may be occuring because of genetic mutations and teratogens.

Treatment of truncus arteriosus consists of surgical repairs.
